Vanesa Robles was born
in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico.
She began her university
studies in 1991 at
the Instituto de Estudios
Superiores y de Occidente
(Iteso) and, at the
same time, started
working at the newspaper
Siglo 21 in Guadalajara.
Robles graduated from
Iteso in 1995. At
Siglo 21, Robles covered
the roots of poverty,
human rights, indigenous
issues, women and
children. In September
1997, she started
working at the newspaper
Público where
she covered the same
issues until 2001
when she moved to
the Culture and Trends
section of the same
paper. In November
1998 she attended
a workshop on "cronicas"
with Mexican journalist
Alma Guillermoprieto.
In November 1999 she
received a grant from
the International
Center for Journalists
in Washington, DC,
and used it to do
an internship at the
newspaper El Nuevo
Herald de Miami.
She
has won the following
awards for her work
in journalism: First
place Jalisco Journalism
award, Emisario 2001
presented by Guadalajara
University for a story
about nightime child
labor. Along with
colleague Mario Mercuri,
she shared first place
Premio Nacional de
Periodismo Cultural
Fernando Benítez
(Fernando Benitez
National Award for
Cultural Journalism),
given by the International
Book Fair of Guadalajara
for a story about
the life of a community
in northern Jalisco
where all the residents
are related to one
another. Along with
Mario Mercuri, first
place Emisario 2001
Journalism Award,
for a series of reports
about the life of
migrants on Mexico's
southern border. Since
last January, Robles
has worked as an independent
reporter for different
publications including
the magazines Magis
and 100 percent Tequila.
Vanesa Robles nacío en Guadalajara, Jalisco.
Comenzó sus estudios universitarios en 1991,
en el Instituto de Estudios Superiores y de Occidente
(Iteso), y al mismo tiempo comenzó a trabajar
en el diario Siglo 21, de Guadalajara. Se graduó
de la universidad en 1995.En Siglo 21 cubrió
las fuentes de pobreza, derechos humanos, indígenas,
mujeres e infancia. En septiembre de 1997 comenzó
a trabajar en el periódico Público, donde
cubrió las mismas fuentes, hasta el año
2001, cuando ingresó a la sección Cultura
y Tendencias, del mismo diario. En noviembre de 1998
tomó un taller de crónica con la periodista
mexicana Alma Guillermoprieto. En noviembre de 1999
obtuvo una beca del International Center for Journalist
(Washington, DC), con la cual hizo un internado en el
diario El Nuevo Herald, de Miami.
Por su trabajo periodístico
ha obtenido los siguientes reconocimientos: primer lugar
en el Premio Jalisco de Periodismo, Emisario 2001, que
organiza la Universidad de Guadalajara, por un reportaje
sobre trabajo infantil nocturno. Junto con Mario Mercuri,
primer lugar en el premio nacional de periodismo cultural
Fernando Benítez, que otorga la Feria Internacional
del Libro de Guadalajara, por un trabajo sobre la vida
en una comunidad del norte de Jalisco, donde todos los
habitantes son parientes. Junto con Mario Mércuri,
primer lugar en el premio de periodismo Emisario 2001,
por un trabajo sobre la vida de los migrantes en la
frontera Sur de México. Desde enero pasado trabaja
como periodista independiente para diferentes publicaciones,
algunas de ellas son las revistas Magis y 100 por ciento
Tequila.
